Synopsis
Non Sequitur is a non-linear intimate family portrait, narrated by frequent and repetitive sentences that are captured from telephone conversations between the artist and his parents over the last 20 years, living in different countries.
Each video sequence was recorded at a different time and location before being placed side by side to form recurrent and random video dialogues.
Non Sequitur is a 2 channel video installation exploring interpersonal communication through perpetual consecutive ‘talking head’ dialogues, generated by non-sequential video engines.
Non Sequitur challenges the basic notion of human connection, by revealing both the inadequacy of words and the profundity that such seemingly mundane communication contains. These layers of meaning only become apparent when received out of context and within a random, performative setting.
Artist Statement
‘Living abroad for the past 20 years, communication with my family has been limited to brief occasional telephone conversations.
Over the years, these conversations have become an automatic sequence of short, repetitive sentences exchanged between us, which make us feel safe in their familiarity. And yet these dialogues, and the spaces between them, often convey thoughts and emotions that the distance hasn’t allowed to unravel, mature and resolve.
Instead they repeat continuously, imprisoned in an infinite void of the machine that keeps them connected.’
